Joan Acklam Boynton

Lineage accounts of the de Acklam family

By William Farrer in Early Yorkshire Charters

703. Grant by William de Acclum, for the health of the soul of Margery (?) his wife, to the monks of Byland of his fishery in Tees below Gayteryg with the onset and 9 acres of land, also licence ot fish in Tees with a net, where others draw their nets, to fix timber and arrange their crates and to dry their nets, also common of pasture (with his men of Acklam) for their animals bringing timber to the fishery for 2 nights with right of entry, and an undertaking that no other fishery shall be made between the said fishery and the one which the grantor last made below Ayresome. c. 1170-1180.

This gift was confirmed by Adam de Brus (n. 773), and also by Roger, son of William de Acclum.

Alfred, the first of the family of Acclum, gave to the canons of Guisborough, at the foundation of the priory (1129), the church of Acklam with 2 bovates of land. As "Alfred the man of Robert de Brus" he held 3 carucates in Acklam about the time of Stephen's accession to the throne. Reiner, his son, attested charters of Robert de Brus, and Cecily, wife of Reiner gave to Whitby a toft in Middlesbrough which William de Acclum, her son, confirmed. The same William amerced 5 marks in 1176 for forest trespass. He had issue Roger and Robert. In 1195 Roger de Acclum was amerced 1m. for making his peace with some one without licence. He and Robert his brother were sureties in 1208 for Richard de Escales. Roger died before 1231, when Ingram de Bovinton and Joan his wife, Henry son of Ralph and Agnes his wife were summoned to answer Robert de Acclum wherefore they did not keep the covenant made between the said Robert and Roger de Acclum father of the said Joan and Agnes, whose heirs they were, touching 3 bovates in Tollesby and a mark's worth of rent in Newbigging. Further that whereas Roger gave him 20s. of rent in his mill of Roxby (Rouceby) to hold for 10 years in exchange for the tenement and rent named above and covenanted that he or his heirs would within the term make over to him land or rent of 2 marks yearly value in exchange for the land and mill, they have not done so. Robert obtained judgment against each for a mark of rent. The fee descended to WIlliam de Bovington, who held in 1272 and 1279 of the heirs of Peter de Brus 1 fee and 1/2 carucate in Acklam with the members and with his parceners 1/2 fee in Linthorpe. Hugh de Lakenby and William de Mowbray of Tanton where his parceners of part of these tenements.

Hugh son of Norman, Earl Hugh's tenant in 1086, was succeeded by Alvered, or Alfred, lord in about 1120. Roger, son of Alvered's grandson William de Acklam, had two daughters, one of whom, Joan, was sole heir to her father's lands after her sister's death without issue. She was the wife of Ingram de Boynton. William the son and heir of this marriage, who was living in 1256 and lord of Acklam in 1284-5, had been succeeded by his son Ingram before 1303 . . . [p. 221]

Roger de Acklam, probably lord, granted to Hugh son of Patrick 14 acres of land here [Roxby] between the foot of the moor and teh waterfall, except the wood of Roucegrive. He died before 1230-1 leaving two daughters and heirs, Agnes who married Henry son of Ralph and died childless, and Joan who married Ingram de Boynton. William, said to be son of Ingram, was lord in 1284-5. He married Alice daughter and heir of Ingram de Monceaux and had a son and heir Ingram, assessed for the subsidy in Roxby in 1301-2, and lord of Roxby and Acklam from that date to 1316 or later. . . . Alfred de Acklam, the founder of the family

The first reference to Alfred is in the founding charter of the Priory of Guisborough, which is introduced here by the editor of the chartularies of the Priory.

Associated with Brus in the grant were his wife Agnes, and their son and heir Adam, who gave all that is above mentioned to the church of St. Mary of Guisbrough, and the brethren who should serve God there, to hold in free, quiet, and perpetual alms, with all the liberties, free customs, and dignities, which they themselves had had in them of the gift and concession of Henry, King of England. This last piece of information is very significant, as it marks the time at which Robert de Brus, the so-called soldier of the Conqueror, received no small part of his possessions. The charter concluded with a confirmation by the founder of certain gifts made to the Priory by his "men." [p. xii-xiii]

Rotsea in the parish of Hutton Cranswick near Driffield. Rents payable in fish were by no means unusual. At Coatham haddocks were the fish specified. Rotsea must have been famous for eels. In the following charter, by which Walter de Bovintun grants land to his son Rabod, who occurs as a donor to the Canons of a bovate at Tibthorpe on p. 96, one of the rents is that of three hundred eels, payable to Peter de Brus, probably the ones assigned by him here to the Priory: "Waterus de Bovintun, cum assensu et concessu Willelmi, filii et haeredis mei . . . Endorsed, Charter of William, son of Ingram and Joan, his wife. It is prepared in duplicate. But that charter is better.

Peter Amundeville, Joan's first Husband

Jollan or Jocelin de Amundeville, son and heir. As son of Elias, he confirmed the gifts which had been made by Beatrice, his grandmother, and Walter, his uncle, and confirmed by his father, to Elsham hospital, specified in detail; among the witnesses to his charter being William de Amundeville, Jollan (Goslanus) de Evermou, Walter de Evermou, and Reiner, nephew of Jollan de Evermou. He also wrote to the pope, asking that the canons should be protected from the intusion of the Hospitallers, due to his own inadvertence. In the period 1196-1203 he gave to the church of Lincoln half a bovate of lnad in the territory of Owersby and 5 selions of his demesne there; and he occurss as the first witness to a Lincolnshire charter of Walter Paynel of West Rasen, 1180-1205 . . . [Clay, p. 119]

Peter de Amundeville, son and heir. As recorded in the Lincolnshire returns of 1212, he was then holding of the bishop of Lincoln 4 carucates in Kingerby and its soke, 1 carucate in Worlaby, 1/2 carucate in Croxton, and 2 1/2 carucates in Elsham by the service of 2 knights' fees; of the count of Aumale 7 1/2 carucates in Barrow on Humber by the serivce of a knight's fee; and of Gilbert de Gant a quarter of a knight's fee in Haceby.[6] He also held 1/2 carucate in Owersby by the service of 1/2 knight's fee, apparently of the Arcy fee; and 3 bovates in Osgodby in chief as of the honour of Lancaster by the service of a unicoloured bracket.[7] He made a lease of the mills of Kirkby and Osgodby for a term of 12 years from 18 May, 1214. On 22 April, 1216, he made a fine with the king for 30 marks for having peace and the restoration of his lands including his house and Kingerby.[1] He died before the following 13 October, by which date Henry de Johanville had been granted by the king the custody of his land and heir with the heir's marriage.[2] The custody evidently changed hands, for at Machaelmas, 1230, both the bishop of Lincoln and Colin de Quatremars were engaged in paying off sums for Peter's heir, the former then owing 160 li. 6s. 6d. and the latter 54 lis. 17s. 7d.[3] Peter's heir was named Ermetrida (presumably his daughter), who married William de Dive. Ingelram and his wife Joan, are mentioned in a Lincolnshire fine.7 It appears that three weeks from Easter Day, 6 Henry III (23rd April, 1222) there was a fine between Geoffrey, son of Baldwin, plaintiff, by Ralph de Warevill, put in his place, and Ingelram de Boynton and Joan his wife, deforciants, of two carucates of land in Orreby, to wit, of all lands and tenements which the said Ingelram and Joan held in dower of the said Joan, in Lindsey, of the inheritance

873. Memorial of the adjustment of a dispute between the monks of Whitby, who claimed tithe and customs, but not sepulture, from 12 carucates belonging to the church of Middlesbrough, once a chapel, and the canons of Guisborough, who claimed for their church of Stainton sepulture for these 12 carucuates, as well as tithes and customs, made before Robert de Brus, of whose alms the canons have the church of Stainton and the monks of the chapel of Middlesbrough, and in the presence of William, prior (of Guisborough), and Nicholas, abbot (of Whitby); namely, that each party shall have tithes, customs and sepulture from 6 carucates, the monks from 4 car. of the fee of John Ingram in Ayresome, 1 car. of the fee of Malet, the man of Roger de Mowbray, in Linthorpe, and 1 car. of their own in Middlesbrough; the canons have 3 car. of the fee of Alfred, the man of Robert de Brus, in Acklam, 1 car. of the fee of Robert Esturmy in Aclkam, 1 car of the fee of Malet, which he holds of Robert de Burs, and 1 car. of their own in Ayresome. Moreover the monks quit-claim to the canons any claim against their parishes by reason of the givft of Hugh, earl of Chester. 1130-1139. [Farrer, vol. II, p. 219]
