The earlier generations of the Boynton pedigree, which it has been impossible to verify, are as follows: Bartholomew Boynton of Boynton, had Walter de Boynton, living 1092, who had Sir Ingram Boynton, Knt., 1113, who had Thomas Boynton, 1142, who had William de Boynton 1166 . . . .

Thus starts the Joseph Foster version of the Boynton pedigree. We can assume the author believed he could verify everything else. In the introduction Foster indicates the authorities consulted in putting together the Yorkshire pedigrees [Introduction]. The pedigree is quite substantial. It takes four pages; each page is approximately 17 inches by 17 inches. It is big. One needs a wall on which to display this much information. I will use a hypertext wall.

Some conventions: Foster, and many others, use .... in lieu of a name that is unknown; I will use x. The files are named as though left to right. The pedigree is left handed; the heir is on the left. This file is 0000 for row 00 file number 00; William who is the last of the unverified [above] is 0000. The son [which cannot be verified] is William who is row 1 and file 1 -- 0101. There are 15 rows -- ordinarily called generations -- to get to 1650.

Each file contains the names of husband and wife and the information about each in the pedigree. In addition, there is a hypertext link to the files of the Boynton parents, siblings, and children.

Foster synthesized the information in the various visitations to which he had access, and added some privately held materials. Hence, it is only as good as the information in the visitations. That information is not definitive. It is handy to have it all together, but one should beware of putting too much stock in it.

Foster begins with William. Click here, and from that page you can click through the entire pedigree.
