Evidences Relating to the Foregoing Descent of the Family of Boynton.
(A) this is opposed to Domesday, "Tochil habuit unum manerium
in bovington," in Edward the Confessor's days, and he held it before and
after the Conquest, until it was given to Earl Morton. Another difficulty
presents itself; surnames are not met with in England till after the conquest,
and if Bartholomew came over with the Conqueror, he would not be styled de
Bovington; yet the ancestor of this family might have had some other name,
and de Bovington be assumed on possessing lands there; bovington, by dropping
the v, is Boington, Boynton.
(B) This is not confirmed by the Crathorne pedigree.
(C) Sir Ingram Monceaux, father of John and Alice, who was
married to Sir William Boynton, held the manor of Berneston and Wynkton,
de Alano Comite, who had Berneston in Richmondshire, of which he was Earl.
The first of the family met with is Joan, wife of John Monceaux, Lord of
Berneston, who by her will, dated 1420, ordered her corpse to be buried in
Berneston church; in this year he died, and the last who ordered his corpse
to be buried there, was William Monceaux, who died A.D. 1446, see page 188.
If Alice de Monceaux, wife of William Boynton, had a daughter married in
1165, the mother must have survived that marriage 65 years, as Alice was
alive in 1220. The dates are certainly inaccurate. This Alice was living
in 1221, as appears from an original charter, B. 22, No. 3, giving two oxganges
of land in Bovington to Nun Appleton priory.--(Mon. Ebor. p. 277)
(D) This is a mistake, as it appears from a pedigree of the
Salvains, for Sir Gerrard Salvain, knight, high sheriff of Yorkshire, A.D.
1311, 12, and 14, married, and had George Salvain, knight, married a daughter
of Thomas Morley or Merley, knight, and had Sir Robert, and Mary, married
to Sir R. Boynton, knight, hence it is plain she was granddaughter of Sir
Gerrard Salvain, who was the first of that name. Sir Thomas, the father of
Sir Robert, is said to have lived in the reign of Richard II. and if his
daughter married in 1141, it may be presumed she was 20 years old at her
marrage, and that her father was at least 20 years older, yet according to
this account Sir Thomas must have been born in or before A.D. 1100, which
deduct from 1337, the time King Richard began his reign, Sir Thomas must
have been at least 227 years of age if he lived about A.D. 1166, and certain
it is William's widow was living A.D. 1220.
(E) There appears to be a note of Mr. Dade's, which says
that Sir Ingram married a daughter of Thomas Mountford, Esq. and had issue
Sir Walter. In another account, from an extract out of the Register of Byland
Abbey, penes Sir Wm. Ingleby, is the following, and the pedigrees out of
religious houses are esteemed as good authorities, viz:--
-
Roger de Aclam
-
A daughter and heiress and Ingram de Boynton (2)
-
Another daughter, ob. s. p.
-
Ingram de Boynton
-
William de Boynton
-
Ingram
-
Walter de Boynton, successit patri A.D. 1320.
-
Thomas Boynton, Esq (6)
-
Walter de Boynton, Mon. Ebor. p. 322.
-
Thomas Boynton, Esq.
-
Sir Thomas Boynton, Knight, per Cart. 1392, 13, Rd. II.
-
Henry de Boynton.
(F) Created a Knight Banneret by Earl of Surrey in Henry
VII reign. In Dugdale and Hopkinson she is called Anne; but her son's will
proves she was called Cicily, unless he had two wives, the first of which
might be called Anne.
(G) This must be another mistake, it is not probable, that
a professed nun and a prioress should be taken as a wife to keep up a family,
even if the pope's dispensation had been obtained, and it would certainly
have been noted; besides the Holderness pedigree shews that Robert Holdenby
married a daughter of Sir Robert Boynton, of Holderness. In the Gildsborough
pedigree it is said R. G. married Jane, daughter of Thomas Boynton of Aclam,
and this Jane had eight children.
(I) He was deputed by Lord Cromwell, in 1537, steward of
all the lordships belonging to St. Mary's Abbey, York, and had a grant from
Henry VIII, dated 5th May, 1539, of the office of high steward for life,
of all the lordships, &c. in Com. Ebor. and Lincoln, that had belonged
to Bridlington Priory, a list of which is given in Mon. Ebor. p. 247.
(K) Son and Heir of Francis Frobisher, of Altoft and Finningly,
Esq. recorder of Doncaster, who married Christian, daughter of Sir Brian
Hastings, of Fenwick, and had William, and Frances, married to Sir Thomas
Boynton, of Barmston, Knight; this is proved from the pedigree of that family.
(L) She was maid of honor to Queen elizabeth. Sir Matthew
left each of his daughters 300 marks.
(M) He was high sheriff of Yorkshire in 1576, 18 Elizabeth,
and was buried at Barmston, 5th January, 1581, but Torre says the will was
made and proved A.D. 1587; he was knighted when high sheriff.
(N) He was high sheriff of Yorkshire, 38 Elizabeth, 1596.
(O) So in Hopkinson's pedigree.
(P) Matthew Boynton, Esq., was knighted by King James, May
9, 1618, and by letters patent dated 25th of that month, advanced to the dignity
of baronet of Great Britain. He was member for Hedon, the third parliament of
James I, assembled at Westminster, and received a pardon under the Great Seal,
Feb. 10, 1625; in 1628 he was high sheriff of Yorkshire, also in 1643, 19 Car.
I. He was chosen representative for Scarbro' in 1645, and was governor of Scarbro'
Castle and Colonel of a troop of horse in the service of the king. Rushworth
has recorded the transactions in which the Colonel was engaged during the contentions
between the parliament and the unfortunate Charles.
