The Beaches of Whitby
The harbor and beaches are protected by a sea wall. On a windy, chilly, gray evening the black monk and the purple monk walked the wall -- looking out at the sea.
And waves pounded against the cliffs.
Looking back toward town: on the left is the cliff, which is topped by the abbey church, and below the crest are houses, shops, restaurants, and the stairway you climb to get from the town to the abbey atop the cliff. On the right you can just see the channel to the docks.

To get to the abbey you climb half way up the hill walking the streets and sidewalks. Then you arrive at the stairs; it is 199 steps from bottom to top. Walking down the stairs from the top of the hill the harbor and the beaches stretch out in front of you. |
But the best thing about beaches is the sand, the shells, the rocks, the objects you can find there.
