Sir Matthew Boynton, baptized at Barmston, 16 January, 1591, knighted by King James I, at Whitehall, 9 May, 1616, and by letters patent, dated the 25th of that month, advanced to the dignity of a baronet of Great Britain, M.P. for Heydon, 18 James I, 1620. He was one of those the rebels (?) chiefly entrusted in Yorkshire, for when Sir John Hotham, and his son, Captain Hotham, were contriving the surrender of Hull to the king, this Sir Matthew Boynton had orders from the parliament to have an eye on them, and endeavour to preserve the town if he perceived it in danger, pursuant to which he contrived the seizing him, and Colonel Matthew Boynton, his son, actually took Sir John prisoner, and received a pardon under the great seal, 10 February, 1625, high sheriff co. York, 1628, 1644, and 1645. He had a deputation, dated at Westminster, 5 April, 1631, for preserving the game in the North and East Ridings, M.P. for Scarborough 25 october, 1645, colonel of a troop of Horse, and governor of Scarborough Castle, temp. Charles I, and took an active part in the civil wars of this period. He died at Highgate, co. Middlesex, and was buried in the chancel of St. Andrew's, Holborn, 12 March, 1646/7.

Frances (1st wife), daughter of Sir Henry Griffith, Knt., and Bart., of Wichnor, co. Stafford, and of Burton Agnes, co. York (and sole heiress to her brother, Sir Henry), by his lady, Elizabeth, daughter Thomas Throckmorton, Esq., of Coughton, co. Warwick, and sister to Margaret, the wife of Sir Rice (Rhys) Griffith, of Brome Court, co. Warwick, lineally descended from the kings of England, the Dukes of Normandy, the Princes of Wales, the Earls of Northumberland, before and after the Conquest, of the Earls of Marche and Dunbar in Scotland, &c. marriage settlement dated 27 September, 1614, and died in July 1634, and buried at Rousby, where a tomb is erected to her memory.

Katherine (2nd wife), 3rd daughter of Thomas, Viscount Fairfax, of Emley, by (? his 3nd wife), Katherine, sister of Henry, Viscount of Dunbar, and relict of Robert Stapleton, of Wighill. She married, 3rdly, to Sir Arthur Ingram, of Temple Newsome, co. York, Knt., who died 4 July 1655. Her ladyship died 23 February, 1666, and is buried in Rousby chapel, where a tomb is standing to her memory, and whereon she is styled Lady Ingram.
